The Secret of Successful Counselling  

Having someone to talk with and confide in, who is there specifically to listen and help you work through issues, is invaluable. Many people feel more comfortable talking to a trained professional therapist who is not connected with their life and is therefore able to listen without judgement or bias.

Acknowledge Your Need for Help

Recognise your need for help and your desire to become a better you. You may find it difficult to focus on you because you are not used to doing so but this a part of the process – to focus on you. Be open to change; this vital to your success.

Be prepared to experience some discomfort

When it is considered that untreated problems occur over many years and can last for a life-time, psychotherapy can go a long way toward changing your life. However, your participation in the therapy sessions – in terms of learning, involvement, application – is one of the keys to your success. As a client it is important for you to be open to exploring your deep seated feeling, revisiting your past and confronting your present anxieties. This may be uncomfortable for you but as you work in collaboration with me, you can have a very good outcome.

Build a Relation with your Therapist

Your relationship with me as your therapist will be a unique one, where I will work with you in order to build and maintain a positive relationship. As your therapist I will listen to you and empathize with you. I will never be judgemental but will be responsive in assisting you to achieve success. Remember, however, that no therapist have a magic wand to change your circumstances and I certainly do not. Changes do not happen overnight – you may even feel worse before things get better, but if you trust the process you will see the changes in you. If you are committed to the process, are willing to work toward the changes you desire we can work together for a really great outcome.

In the same way we have the ability to make ourselves unwell by locking away our pain, we also have the ability to heal ourselves by unlocking the pain and struggles which causes our illness. We cannot escape ourselves; we cannot hide from ourselves; we need to confront ourselves and the issues which can often plague our minds even though we try to push them away. We confront ourselves by acknowledging our feelings.
